What does staging in cancer means?

I am reading the book on Nutrition.Immunity.Longetivity about cancer chapter

Cancer doesn't happen overnight.

The most sophisticated instruments can only detect tumors when it reaches 1mm, which is equivalent of about 1 million cancer cell!!

When it's reaching 1cm, that's at least 1 billion cancer cells!!

So all cancer has incubation period,

- it takes 6-8 years for a cancer cell to develop from 1 cell to size of 1cm
- it takes 10-20 years for a colon cancer to develop to size of 1cm!!

Why I do not choose Formula Milk, learn to read label!

With the recent news on Milk powder, it's alarming again for us as consumer on the food safety issue. 96

Given that infant, children and kids are regularly taking formula milk powder for their protein source and growing up. It's important that the food that they are taking are very safe.

Galacto-Oligosaccharide (GOS) is a common ingredient that has been added in formula milk, according to news it easily cause allergic reaction in those who already have allergies such as eczema and asthma 

Where we can see them?

Look at one of the ingredient label in most common formula milk.



What is GOS
GOS is a carbohydrate added in foods to promote the growth of good bacteria in the gut.
GOS is a permitted food ingredient in many countries and can be added to any foods including infant formula. 

What are GOS Allergy Symptoms?

GOS allergy symptoms can show up in the respiratory system, skin or in the stomach and intestines. The symptoms are sneezing, runny nose/ blocked nose, cough, throat and chest tightness, wheezing, hives and itch - including itchy eyes - and diarrhoea. 

It's important that we need to be wiser consumer, to choose the food which is safe.

Looking the ingredient label, can you read and understand most of them?

Looking at both ingredient label which gives protein source, which one do you understand? 

Which one is natural source? Which one is synthetic? 




For me, I will choose the above which contain Soybean, Banana, Grape, Brocolli etc. As they are wholesome food, than synthetic ingredient. 

I will not choose the one below, given that I don't understand most of them - Such as L-Carnitine, Zinc Sulfate, Cyanocabalamin???

One of the most valuable lesson that I learnt from ingredient label is that, they are being arranged in Most used ingredients, until the least used ingredients

For example, look at ingredient label below, another popular brand of formula milk.

First ingredient is Hydrolyzed Corn Starch, following by Sucrose - both are high in sugar content and food thickening which give sweetness in the milk powder. 

Milk protein concentrate are no 3.

Following by Oils (Soy oil and sunflower oil)!!

And other ingredients which I don't understand.

Is Probiotic really safe for your health?

There are many misconceptions when it comes to nutrition, thus although with the advancement of medical and technology, and more variety of dietary supplements, yet the disease rate is increasing still. 

Where is the missing link? 

one of the biggest MISCONCEPTION on nutrition is about Probiotic. 96





























Why A Person Take Probiotic? 
- Promoting gut health
- To address leaky gut syndrome
- Constipation
- Bloated and digestive issues
- to have more good bacteria
- to strengthen the immune system
- and may other reasons

Let's look at probiotic in details. 

What does Probiotic made of and Side effect of taking it?

Probiotics are commonly made of bacterias, the most common one are. These are normally active cultures

1. Lactobacillus acidophilus
2. Lactobacillus rhamnosus
3. Lactobacillus gasseri
4. Bifidobacterium bifidum

In our gut system, we have at least 1,000 SPECIES of bacteria, while cultured probiotic contains just a handful of bacterial species, but in large amount. 

When we are taking large amount of 1 single species or few species of bacteria, it will flush away the existing species of good bacteria in our gut, given the limited amount of space. 

End up the number of species of good bacteria in our gut is lesser, it causes more issue in the long run, and worst, we have to rely on this external species in long run.  This is call REPLACEMENT THERAPY



How do we know? Let's look at label to understand more.

What happen to other species of existing bacteria in our gut when we load in all these billions and millions of bacteria?

Other than this, different individual has different eating habits.

Do you think the bacteria required in the gut system for both Amy and Cindy are the same? 

Definitely not!!

So both Amy and Cindy taking in the similar type of probiotic that contains a few species of bacteria, it cause adverse side effects, whereby some may have diarrhea.

Additionally, when patinets suffering from acute pacreatitis (rapid inflammation of the pancreas) were adminstered probiotic, 16% patients died, compared to 6% in control group.

Worse of all, it affect the heart health, making those meat eaters who are consuming probiotic getting more susceptible to form TMAO and artery clogging!

























If not Probiotic then how? 

A right method should be letting our gut system to SELF PRODUCE good bacteria by our own, so we won't lead to dependency to external sources.

Safety Concern of the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

British health regulators have issued a warning that some traditional Chinese medications contain "dangerously high" levels of lead, mercury, and arsenic.

On Tuesday, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) warned people not to use a number of unlicensed Chinese medicines, including a product called Bak Foong Pills, which are used to treat menstrual pain.

The medicine has been recalled in Hong Kong after it was found to contain up to twice the level of lead permitted by the Hong Kong Government.

Another Chinese medication called Hairegenerator, used for the treatment of hair loss, has also been recalled in Hong Kong after a sample was found to contain 11 times the permitted level of mercury.

The Swedish National Food Agency (SFNA), meanwhile, has found extremely high levels of arsenic in products going by a variety of names, including Niu-Huang Chieh-tu-pein, Divya Kaishore Guggul, and Chandraprabha Vati.

These are used for the treatment of mumps, sore throat, tonsillitis, toothache, skin infections, anorexia, and fever in young children.

"The adulteration of traditional Chinese medicines with heavy metals is a significant international problem and can pose a serious risk to public health," said Richard Woodfield, MHRA's Head of Herbal Policy.

 UK consumers can follow Woodfield's advice: "To help you choose an herbal medicine that is suitable for you, look for a product that has a Traditional Herbal Registration (THR) or product license number on the packaging.

These products have met the acceptable quality and safety standards. – AFP/Relaxnews, August 22, 2013.

As mentioned by Dr Chen during Live of Dr Chen chapters, there are 3 category of plant foods:
1. Poisonous Category (example, Ma Huang)
2. Herbal Categry (Korean Ginseng, TCM)
3. Fruits and Vegetable Category - Given that it's food, it can be consumed on daily basis. 

Commonly, we thought that TCM is better than western medicine, given that it's herbal. However, let's look at one example, Aspirin. Which is used to treat fever, inflammation, joint pain or even heart disease. 
Aspirin could be made from medicational herb call White Willow Bark. In TCM, white whillow bark is also used to help with pain relief, arthritis, reduce inflammation. 
However, why white willow bark from TCM "seems" better? Often, it's due to the concentration whereby in preparing the TCM, it's not as concentrated as western medicine. Thus, the effect is slower and side effect is lesser than western medicine. When we are consuming it, it will burden our kidney as well.

Combating haze again

Haze is coming to Singapore again, the PSI hits above 300, the hazardous level. It's the first time hitting this level since July 2013.

Look at the before and after!!



When inhaling these air pollutants, it easily cause irritation of nose, throat, our respiratory system. Thus, we may easily have fever, coughing and sneezing.

For those who has existing medical condition, the condition may be worsen as there might be asthma attack, allergies or even cardiovascular problem. All these pollutants may entering our blood stream and causing inflammation within our body.

I am sure we are more well prepared already, compare to 2013. To add on further, here are some of the good tips.

1. Close all the windows, turn on the aircond or air-purifier if you have.

2. Stay indoor if possible

3. Try not turn to medication if you have sneezing, coughing or irritation, as those are just working as suppressant. In contrary, you should be nourishing your immune system, so that you are able to cleanse out the dirt, mucus, phlegm effectively.

In order to nourish your immune system, take more than 15 serving of fruits and vegetables as we are living in a complex and stressful environment. As a convenient, here is what I do, as a convenient.


I will take 

1. Oxyginberry


2. Triflora

Triflora contains the five leaf ginseng, which also known as sweet tea vine, which are very effective in detox the heavy metals, preservatives, air pollants and toxin chemicals from our body.

3. Orchestra

Which contains the Ashitaba and Kumazasa. Kumazasa has the powerhouse in cleansing and detoxification, especially for our blood and liver. Thus able to cleanse out the air pollutant easily.

Ashitaba, which containing chalcones, flavonoids, coumarins, chlorophyll, thus able to fight against the free radical damage caused by the air pollutants.

Immunotheraphy vs Nutritional Immunology in fighting Cancer

Saw the newspaper article lately in medical science in Immunotheraphy in fighting cancer, whereby it's leveraging on patient's own immune cells to attack cancer.

However, it's taking the immune cells out from the patient's body and do intensive training in the lab so that it knows how to fight a cancer cells when releasing the immune cells back to the body.

Why not we train up our immune cells on daily basis? Than waiting until things happen then only started leveraging on "external's intensive training"? How much is it going to cost and how effective it is?









This is something that has been advocating in Nutritional Immunology for about 30 years.

Who is the best Doctor?

























Our immune system, who is the best doctor in the world, does 3 major function. Protect, Cleanses and Repairs. 

Let's look at how it fight against the normal viruses/bacteria.

What are the danger of Whey Protein?


Where does Whey Protein come from? 

Whey protein is a mixture of globular proteins isolated from whey, the liquid material created as a by-product of cheese production.

Whey protein typically comes in four major forms            

concentrate (WPC), isolate (WPI), hydrolysate (WPH) and Native Whey.
Whey Protein Drink Side Effects
Whey protein is a dietary supplement, a powder derived from cow's milk that is lauded by athletes and bodybuilders for its ability to build hard, lean and strong muscles. The body needs protein as a source of energy, for building and repairing muscles and bones, and to maintain the body's metabolic functions. Whey protein contains the branched chain amino acids (BCAA) leucine, isoleucine and valine, essential amino acids for athletes and those who exercise. Whey protein is of high quality. It's easily digested and absorbed into the body.

Serious Side Effects

Some serious side effects of whey protein may be related to a high protein intake. These include osteoporosis, kidney damage and liver damage. Another serious side effect is an allergic reaction, particularly in people with lactose intolerance.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones become porous, weakened and brittle. They may fracture while bending or during a fall. Low levels of minerals in the bone, such as calcium, results in osteoporosis. Excessive whey protein may cause osteoporosis because amino acids break apart and pass into the blood during the digestion of protein, raising the acidity of the blood. According to the North Western Health Sciences University website, because your body must have a balanced pH level, calcium is pulled from the bone to neutralize the acidity. Therefore, the more protein taken in the diet, the higher the acidity of the blood and the more calcium needed.

Kidney and Liver Damage

Excessive whey protein may not cause kidney or liver damage in healthy people. But because the body doesn't store excess protein, according to the Mayo Clinic website, the product of excess protein, nitrogen, is excreted by the liver and the kidneys.This makes people with kidney or liver disease and other chronic health condition at risk for kidney and liver diseases when excess protein is added to the diet and has to be excreted. These people should consult their health care provider before starting a new diet.

Allergic Reaction

People with milk allergy or lactose intolerance may be at risk for developing an allergic reaction when taking whey protein drinks. Whey protein products shouldn't be taken by these people. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include a rash or hives with itching and swelling of the face, tongue or throat, along with shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. An allergic reaction is a serious medical condition that requires immediate medical care and attention.

Less Serious Side Effects

Less serious side effects of whey protein supplements may include headache, abdominal cramps, bloating and diarrhea.

Instead of taking Whey Protein, i will opt for safer alternative which is Nutrifresh, which contains 15 types of fruits and vegetables, with main ingredients - Soy Bean.

What harmful ingredients to take note in household items?


Do you know what are the chemical burdens to our body?





Do you think that things that we use topically are less or more harmful than the food that we consume? The answer is it may be more harmful. 

You may be surprised to learn that substances that we breath in or absorb through the skin may go directly to our blood stream if the substances are very tiny, therefore affecting our body system if the substances are harmful. 

Whereas food that we eat at least will go thru our stomach to let gastric juice to kill the germs for us first. Hence, always beware of the harmful chemical ingredients in our house hold items. 

1. Fluoride - Found in toothpaste and drinking water. Research has revealed that fluoride increases cancer risk. 

2. Formaldehyde - In disinfectants, shower gels, body lotions. Classified as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. 

3. Lead and Mercury - In whitening skin care and toys. Could harm nerves, digestion, urination, endocrine system, bones and others. Lead in placenta and breast milk can harm fetuses and infants. 

4. Nonylphenol - In cosmetics, plastics, pesticides. Could cause low sperm counts and malformed genitalia. 

5. Perchloroethylene (perc) - In dry cleaning solvents. Linked to increased risk of certain cancers. 

6. Phenol - In plastics, paints and some medicines. Could harm brain, nose, throat, lungs and heart. 

7. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) - Found in Shampoos, toothpaste, foaming bath oil. In 1983, the Journal of American College of Toxicology reported that animals exposed to SLS experienced eye damage, depression, laboured breathing, diarrhoea, severe skin irritation and corrosion and death. 

8. Triclosan - Found in toothpaste, hand wash, shower gels, toys, clothing. Research from the US shows that triclosan mixed with chlorinated water releases chloroform. When absorbed chloroform thru the skin, it may cause depression, liver disorder and even cancer. 



9. Turpertine - In show polish, paint thinner. Breathing or swallowing turpentine causes kidney and bladder irritation. 

10. Vitamin C - Found in whitening skin care. Too much cause redness, swelling and sensitive reaction. 



In fact, many times, unknowingly, the infants are already exposed to chemical pollution in the womb!! 


The EWG (The Environmental Working Group) has shown a study's result that 232 different chemicals in the cord blood of 10 babies who were exposed to the substances while still in the womb. 

The study tested for chemicals found in nearly every American household. The findings represented the first reported detections in American newborns for 21 contaminants. Among them:

1. Bisphenol A (BPA) - to make polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins that are made into hard plastic infant formula bottles, water bottles, metal food cans, safety helmets, glasses, TV, computer, CDs. BPA is linked to cancer, cognitive and behavioural impairment, endocrine system disruption, reproductive and cardiovascular system abnormalities, diabetes, asthma, and obesity.











2. Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) - fire retardant for circuit board. Interferes with thyroid function and may inhibit the production of T cells to fight viruses and bacteria.

3. Perfluorobutanoic Acid (PFBA or C4) - used to make non-stick, grease-, stain- and water-resistant coatings for consumer products. It is linked to cancer, birth defects and infertility.

4. 8 Previously undetected polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) - used in industrial lubricants, coolants and insulating materials. According to the US government and academic scientists, PCBs have been shown to damage the immune system, disrupt the endocrine system and developing brain.

To date, EWG studies have found out 414 industrial chemicals, pollutants, and pesticides in 186 people from newborns to grandparents.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has only tested about 200 of its inventory of more than 80000 chemicals in the market and has banned only 5!!

It takes more than food safety to be healthy!! 

We have a choice indeed to safeguard our family's health by choosing the personal care and household products that are safe.

Be a wise consumer. Always check the ingredient label upon getting any product in the market. Make sure at least it's free of harmful chemicals as listed above.
