What does staging in cancer means?

I am reading the book on Nutrition.Immunity.Longetivity about cancer chapter

Cancer doesn't happen overnight.

The most sophisticated instruments can only detect tumors when it reaches 1mm, which is equivalent of about 1 million cancer cell!!

When it's reaching 1cm, that's at least 1 billion cancer cells!!

So all cancer has incubation period,

- it takes 6-8 years for a cancer cell to develop from 1 cell to size of 1cm
- it takes 10-20 years for a colon cancer to develop to size of 1cm!!
