Tips in Selecting Healthy Cooking Oil

As a consumer, how should we choose a healthy cooking oil?

The biggest concern now is, most oil are high in Omega 6, causing inflammation. Which leads to most diseases

So How to choose a healthy cooking oil?

Main Criteria to look at

1. Omega 6: Omega 3 ratio

2. Smoke Point

What are some misconception that we need to take note for selecting a healthy cooking oil?

Let's listen from Dr Chen in her sharing

I have made a summaries on misconception from her sharing, you can look at the snapshot here. You can listen to the video to understand more!

1. Some oil are being labelled that it has went through refinery process to increase the smoke point

Is it really true?

2. Can we reuse the cooking oil?

Most food that we are taking outside are mostly cooked with re-used cooking oil to save cost.

3. When you are deep frying chicken with cooking oil at home, you see bubble in the oil after a while.

Why the cooking oil in fast food chain never get bubbled although they deep frying food all day long?

4. Why the chicken/food that you fried at home turned brown very soon, yet the french fries/chicken at restaurant never get golden brown when leaving there?

Sodium acid pyrophosphate is being added

5. Will oil spoil? Especially when we fried chicken (any meat)

6. Why the fast food oil can be used for more than few days to 1 week and the oil never spoilt?

This preservatives is being added, a component in the lighter!!

Side effects of TBHQ?

Although the amount is lesser than the regulated amount. However, because of the re-using of the oil, it gets concentrated.

Additional tip to Choosing cooking oil

What about Coconut oil?

Let's look at the Straits Times article published earlier.

The best oil in the market is made from Macademia, and Perilla with the criteria on smoke point and omega ratio.

For me I choose the E.Excel Blended cooking oil, with the mix of Macademia and Perilla seed for best convenience, with no preservatives and chemically added.

Irregardless of which oil, as long as they are oil they are high in calorie. Any teaspoon of any types of oil contains 120 calorie!

Never take health for granted

Staying healthy is a daily habit

"Many illness can only be detected at later stages"

"Why the term early-stage cancer is so misleading"

"Diseases doesn't happen overnight, becoming healthy doesn't happen overnight either"

"Keeping healthy doesn't simply mean fighting off disease"

"Keeping healthy starts small"

"Nutrition doesn't work overnight, it's an ongoing process, which needs to be practiced everyday for maximum benefits"

"Suddenly starting to focus on nutrition when you are already sick is always too late"

Traditional Chinese Medicine vs Western Medicine vs Food

Last Friday a friend shared with me about Chinese medicine, which is usually claimed to be safer and lesser side effects.

This Chinese medicine is very commonly recommended when a person is having flu, fever and fever.

Thankfully equipping with the Nutritional Immunology, instead of looking at the function of the medicine, first thing that I look at is the labels.

Some of you probably seen this before as it's available at over the counter.

First thing that I saw in the label is Ephedrae

Often we thought since it's plant food, it must be safe.

However, Natural isn't Always Safe

For example, Ephedrae

Ephedrae is a common plant exists in weight loss products. FDA actually banns the use of the Ephedrae in dietary supplement.

However, why it appears in medicine for flu, cough and fever?

It turns out that it's being used in medicine because of it's ability to induce sweating!

In Harvard Health,

  • "In 2003, FDA announced it was banning the sale of products containing ephedra."

  • "It claims for promoting weight loss as well as for increasing energy and alertness"

  • "Side effects of herb include heart palpitations, nausea, and vomiting. More than 800 dangerous reactions have been reported, among them, heart attacks, strokes, seizures, and sudden death"

  • "According to Annals of Internal Medicine, ephedra products make up only 1% of herbal supplement sales in US, but they are responsible for 62% of herbal related reports to poison control centers"

Natural is not always safe.

If it's safe, it should be able to be consumed on daily basis.
The question that I will always ask is that, is pregnant lady, kids or infant, elder safe to consumer the products?

In the Nutritional Immunology, we know We have best doctor within us, which is our Immune System

Among TCM, Western Medicine and Food, which do you think will nourish our Immune System the most?

Do you encounter constant hair falls and hair thinning?

Is this getting common when body starts to age?

  • Frequent hair falls
  • Hair thinning
  • Split ends
  • Unhealthy hair follicle

For healthy hair, prevent premature aging is one of important factors. Other than this, we need to look into Biotin, if we are lacking of biotin in our body

Let's look at What can Biotin do for my body?

Without Biotin, it will cause many issues, which also contributing to hair loss.

Where can you find Biotin?

There are many products out there in the market promoting Biotin. As a consumer, how do you know if it's safe?

Let's look at the ingredient label, to know if it's made from Synthetic chemical or Wholesome food

Comparing the both labels highlighted, which one is safer and healthier?

As convenience, you can go for ToEnjoy, it tastes very yummy too!

How safe is the organic fruits and vegetables?

Grateful to be able to attend a training on 3rd March with Dr Chen and family, to understand more in depth in various aspects including the safety of the food and ingredients that we take.

How safe is our organic food?

According to wikipedia

Organic food is food produced by methods that comply with the standards of organic farming. Standards vary worldwide, but organic farming in general features practices that strive to cycle resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity.

Organic farming means a healthier method in producing the fruits/vegetables, however, does it ensure that it's safe from contamination?

The only way to really sure the safety of the fruits and vegetables produced are via the testing, to ensure that it's safe from those heavy metals, pesticides, micro-organism, poisonous and chemicals.

I am grateful that all the Superfoods that I am taking are free from those chemicals.

These are the list of pesticides being tested up to today, in all the Healthy Fast Food that I am consuming. In the future, the list will grow when there are new pesticides come up in the market.

Pesticide List

These are the poisons that have been tested in all the Superfood that I am taking

Poisons testing

Looking at the label of the Vegecolor that I am taking, which contains 28 types of vegetables in rainbow of color and free of all the pesticides and chemicals, definitely it's safer than much vegetables out there.

Cheers
